Rosemary is an essential ingredient for holiday turkeys, but it adds wonderful flavor to meats, other poultry and vegetables too. It also makes a good addition to potpourris. Start seed early indoors. Plants tolerate light frost; set outside early.

Planting Instructions:

  • For a head start, plant the seeds or cuttings indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last spring frost.
  • Plant the seeds/cuttings in well-drained soil. For best growth, the soil should be around 70ºF.
  • Be sure to give your plants enough room to grow. Rosemary grows to about 4 feet tall and spreads about 4 feet as well.
  • In the garden, plant near beans, cabbage, carrots, and sage.

  • Soil requirements: Rosemary seeds prefer well-drained, sandy or loamy soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. The soil should be light and not too rich in organic matter.
  • Sunlight needs: Rosemary plants require full sun, which means they need at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  • Watering requirements: Rosemary seeds need moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, rosemary plants are drought-tolerant and require less frequent watering.
  • Planting season: The best time to plant rosemary seeds is in the spring, after the last frost has passed. In warmer climates, they can also be planted in the fall.
  • Depth and spacing: Plant rosemary seeds at a depth of about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm). Space the seeds or seedlings about 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.
  • Germination time: Rosemary seeds typically take 2 to 4 weeks to germinate. Germination can be slow and erratic, so patience is required.
  • Maturity time: Rosemary plants usually take about 6 to 12 months to reach maturity, depending on growing conditions.
  • Harvesting time: The best time to harvest rosemary is in the morning after the dew has dried but before the heat of the day. This helps preserve the essential oils in the leaves.
  • Harvesting tips: Use sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut the stems. Harvest the top few inches of the plant, and avoid cutting more than one-third of the plant at a time to ensure continued growth. Store harvested rosemary in a cool, dry place or freeze it for long-term storage.
