  • Quantity: 300 Seeds/Pack

Planting Instructions:

Indoors: 1/2” deep, 4-6 weeks before the last heavy frost. Sow into individual cells, transplant out as soon as possible (after the first few leaves appear) - place 3” apart in early spring, or as soon as soil can be worked.

Outdoors: Best to plant in early spring - 1/2” deep and 1-2” apart, with soil temperatures at 50 degrees. Soaking seeds overnight aids in germination.

Harvest: Begin picking at 1” for baby beets and up to 3” across for the most tender and best tasting. For the best storage, cut off the greens 2” above the top of the beet.

Tip: Sow every 2 weeks for a continuous harvest

  • Soil requirements: Detroit Dark Red Beetroot seeds prefer well-drained, loamy soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. The soil should be rich in organic matter to support healthy root development.
  • Sunlight needs: These seeds require full sun exposure, which means they need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Watering requirements: Beetroot seeds need consistent moisture, especially during germination and early growth stages. Water the plants regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
  • Planting season: The best time to plant Detroit Dark Red Beetroot seeds is in early spring or late summer. This allows the plants to mature in cooler weather, which is ideal for beetroots.
  • Depth and spacing: Plant the seeds about 1/2 inch deep and space them 1 to 2 inches apart in rows that are 12 to 18 inches apart. Thin the seedlings to 3 to 4 inches apart once they are a few inches tall to allow enough room for the roots to develop.
  • Germination time: The seeds typically germinate within 5 to 10 days under optimal conditions.
  • Maturity time: Detroit Dark Red Beetroots usually reach maturity in about 55 to 60 days after planting.
  • Harvesting time: The best time to harvest beetroots is in the early morning or late afternoon when the temperatures are cooler. This helps to maintain the crispness and flavor of the roots.
  • Harvesting tips: Use a garden fork or spade to gently lift the beetroots from the soil. Be careful not to damage the roots. After harvesting, trim the leaves to about 1 inch above the root to prevent moisture loss. Store the beetroots in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator to keep them fresh.
