How to Grow Broccoli From Seeds:
Broccoli is packed full of vitamins, especially vitamins A, C, and D, and is among the more popular dark green vegetables. This hardy vegetable is part of the cabbage family and in many areas of the country you can produce two crops a year, both in the summer and the fall. Make plans for planting your broccoli seeds after the last chance of frost has passed in your area for a summer harvest, or in midsummer for a fall crop.

Instructions:
1. Plant your broccoli seeds in a location with full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Allow enough room to space the seeds 18 inches apart and provide 3 feet between rows, if planting more than one row.
2. Clear the planting area of all foliage, rocks, or debris. Use a mechanized tiller or hand garden tools to break up the soil to a depth of 12 inches.
3. Amend the soil with an inch of compost and/or other organic matter. Add fertilizer, such as 5-10-10 to the planting area as directed on the label. Level the area with a rake.
4. Sow the broccoli seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep and space the seeds 18 inches apart. You can space the seeds closer together and then thin the seedlings later if you prefer. Cover the seeds and water to moisten the soil.
5. Supply an inch of water weekly throughout the growing season, unless rainfall does. Reapply fertilizer around the broccoli when the plants are half-grown.

  • Soil requirements: Broccoli seeds prefer well-drained, fertile soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. The soil should be rich in organic matter and have good moisture retention.
  • Sunlight needs: Broccoli requires full sun, which means at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Watering requirements: Broccoli needs consistent moisture. Water the plants regularly, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Aim for about 1-1.5 inches of water per week, either from rainfall or irrigation.
  • Planting season: The best time to plant broccoli seeds is in early spring or late summer for a fall harvest. In cooler climates, you can also plant in early summer.
  • Depth and spacing: Plant broccoli seeds about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Space the seeds 18 inches apart in rows that are 24 inches apart to allow for adequate growth and air circulation.
  • Germination time: Broccoli seeds typically germinate within 5 to 10 days under optimal conditions.
  • Maturity time: Broccoli plants usually reach maturity in 60 to 100 days after planting, depending on the variety.
  • Harvesting time: The best time to harvest broccoli is in the morning when the heads are firm and before the buds start to open. This ensures the best flavor and texture.
  • Harvesting tips: Use a sharp knife to cut the main head of broccoli, leaving about 5-6 inches of stem. After harvesting the main head, side shoots will continue to grow and can be harvested later. Store harvested broccoli in the refrigerator to maintain freshness.
